Around thirty ministers and more than 300 researchers from over 60 countries have gathered in Agadir for the 6th World Week of Francophone Science. Held under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI, this event places Morocco at the heart of international scientific diplomacy.
Following in the footsteps of cities such as Bucharest, Cairo, Quebec, Toulouse and Dakar, it is now Agadir’s turn to host the 6th edition of the World Week of Francophone Science, from 12 to 15 October 2026.
For four days, the capital of the Souss-Massa region will bring together the international academic community, establishing itself as the nerve centre of French-language knowledge and research.
Science as a lever for diplomacy and dialogue
Co-organised by Ibnou Zohr University and the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), this event addresses a crucial theme: the key role of Francophone scientific diplomacy in the face of contemporary geopolitical tensions and challenges.
The aim is to illustrate how cross-border academic cooperation can provide concrete solutions to today’s major challenges:
Ethics and the development of artificial intelligence;
Public health issues and the preservation of linguistic biodiversity;
Strengthening peace and combating disinformation, the flagship theme of the Youth Congress.
The event features the Conference of North African University Rectors, the 6th Scientific Francophonie Conference, and the 6th Ministerial Conference on Higher Education on Thursday 15 October. To ensure a global reach, all presentations and round-table discussions are being streamed live online.
Morocco: an academic and diplomatic hub
By hosting this major event, Agadir is cementing its status as a leading international academic centre, spearheaded by Ibnou Zohr University. A thematic workshop will, in particular, highlight the dynamics of the scientific Francophonie within the Kingdom.
For Morocco, this event illustrates its intellectual influence and its strategic position as a bridge between Africa, the Arab world and the French-speaking world. Building on the major sporting and cultural events hosted in the country, the Kingdom is once again demonstrating its ability to bring together decision-makers from around the world to focus on knowledge and innovation.
