The statements made by Fouzi Lekjaa regarding Lamine Yamal’s origins continue to spark reactions in Spain. In this context, comments made in 2024 by the FC Barcelona forward’s paternal grandmother have resurfaced in several Spanish media outlets.
Speaking on the Espejo Público program on Antena 3, she defended her grandson’s decision to represent Spain. « This child is not from Morocco. He was born here and raised here, » she said, arguing that the player’s decision was a natural one given his upbringing.
She also denied that there had been any family pressure, stating that Mounir Nasraoui, Lamine Yamal’s father, had never tried to influence his choice of national team.
These comments have resurfaced following Fouzi Lekjaa’s recent statements, in which he recalled the Moroccan origins of the player’s family while insisting that Morocco had always respected his decision to wear the Spain national team jersey.
Despite the recurring debate surrounding his international allegiance, Lamine Yamal has always maintained his decision to represent La Roja, while the Moroccan football authorities continue to state that they respect his choice.
